THE EVOLUTION OF LIVING SCHOOL - THE FIRST FIVE YEARS
Living School is now in its sixth year of operation. Over five years, the school ecosystem has developed in complexity – and through incredible challenges.
- Birthed in the bush fires of the 2019 summer – when the east coast of NSW was on fire.
- Challenged by COVID lockdowns in the first and second year of operation.
- Rebuilt after the devastating historic floods of 2022 – and the gale-force winds that destroyed our temporary structure.
Through all of these natural disasters, the school evolved from an original K-8 NSW registered and accredited school into a K-10, then K-12 accredited and registered school.
In 2024, the school successfully registered as the first International Baccalaureate Diploma School on the North Coast of NSW.
In 2024, we also committed to supporting the Ngulingah Aboriginal program, offering a continuation of learning and community connection.
The complexity and challenge of conducting this school from an original 12 staff school to an 83 staff employment base has been the result of a committed and changing community.
With vision comes grit – and this community-led project has it all.
A final thought
We are a progressive school – not alternate. Even so, when you think of other ‘schooling’ options, the mind will jump to Montessori, Steiner and possibly Democratic models.
Consider when these options were introduced…
- Montessori – 1909
- Steiner/Waldord – 1919
- Summer Hill – 1921
It is time for a change to add to the mainstream focus on knowledge-based curriculum offerings.
