The reason I chose a worm farm for my project is that with the right amount of farms, we can effectively reuse almost all food waste and turn it into healthy fertiliser that will in turn help us grow more food, the waste of said food going back into the farm and repeating the process.
Design Manifesto
I chose Halve-it goal 2, Halving our solid waste by recycling or compacting. This goal is the most fit for my project, as it is directly about reducing waste for a healthier school environment.
The reason I chose a worm farm for my project is that with the right amount of farms, we can effectively reuse almost all food waste and turn it into healthy fertiliser that will in turn help us grow more food, the waste of said food going back into the farm and repeating the process. The reason this would be so beneficial is because of just how damaging food waste can be on a large scale, food waste is a serious issue that could be halved, if not solved by simply turning our waste into something useful to both humans and the environment around us.
The systems already in use are worm compost bins or simple compost piles that work by piling waste that gets compacted and broken down into healthy soil or compost liquid with the help of worms. The plan for my project is to do the same thing but build it in a way that makes it easily usable and effective for a whole school.
The aim of my project is to design and build a functioning worm fertilizer farm using food waste from middle school and surrounding cafes/restaurants as worm food as well as using recycled materials for the tub.
My hypothesis is that if we place worm farms around the brown and jolly campus, then we could effectively halve our food waste because the worm farms will recycle the waste into healthy fertiliser that can grow more fruits and vegetables.
A large problem with my system is compost clogging the mesh over time.
this causes two major problems in my system:

Slower drainage of the liquid fertilizer

Build up of waste that makes reusing more waste impossible
Solution: a tool with many blunt spikes to clear the mesh, like the majority of worm farms, my system is detachable at all compartments, meaning you can remove the bottom compartment and clear the mesh with ease. It's necessary for the spikes to be blunt so they can't impale the worms.
