By building The Pannocchia Pizza Project, a communal cob pizza oven in the outdoor play spaces, we can provide nutrient-dense, student-cooked meals that fuel the rapid brain and body development of growing Middle Schoolers.
Design Manifesto
Halve It Component:
My design project is primarily based on the Nutrition pillar of our school’s framework.
-
Nutrition is the process of consuming, absorbing, and using nutrients from food that are necessary for growth in our brains and bodies. In a Middle School, this is very important because adolescence is the second largest growing stage in development so we need this nutrition to fuel our growing bodies.
Sustainable Development Goal:
SDG 2: Zero Hunger
The Pannocchia Pizza project meets SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) because it provides an opportunity for students to learn how to cook, how to share meals, the nutritional values of food, and how to fuel their bodies for learning.
64% to 65% of people report that cooking and sharing meals together helps them unwind, relax, and boost their mood, which creates the mental space needed for better focus.
School Context:
If you look closely at the new Middle School, most people probably think it looks incredible and it's going to be great. I think this as well, but I see quite a big problem. The new school is going to have a cafeteria and a dining space, but these spaces make some people feel disconnected and alone.
Over 60% to 70% of children and teens worldwide consume sugar-sweetened beverages every day. While most are consumed at home, studies show that up to 42% of elementary students and 63% of middle schoolers report having sugary drinks available for purchase at school. This solution would counteract this by providing a nutritional option for fueling middle schoolers bodies and brains.
Liveability
Making food and sharing a meal with others is believed to lead to a happier and healthier life. According to a Cornell University study, “food acts as a kind of social glue.” My pizza oven will give children (peers) a reason to talk to people that they would not usually choose to talk to. It will create new friendships and it will create new and improved social networks throughout middle school. Preparing food as a team acts as a strong predictor of positive and healthy relationship scores by building mutual trust, communication, and emotional bonding.
Hundertwasser
Pizza ovens are usually round, specifically dome-shaped because this design provides the best heat circulation. The curved walls allow hot air to rise, bounce off the dome ceiling, and reflect evenly down onto the pizza, ensuring both the crust and the toppings cook thoroughly and evenly. With Hundertwasser's principals and properties being no straight lines my pizza oven design reflects this strongly being a dome shape.
Hundertwasser said “the straight line is godless and immortal” He also called for the role of an "architecture doctor" who could heal sick, sterile buildings by introducing uneven floors, uneven walls, colourful tiles, and spontaneous vegetation. I will include some of these properties by building a little veggie herb garden around it. The Pannocchia Pizza will also include tiles in the making of the pizza oven with floors around it as uneven and flowing.
The Problem
How might we design a cob pizza oven in the outside playspaces that helps increase the nutritional value and fuel adolescence bodies?
Our Sustainable Solution
This design is a cob pizza oven. This installation should be located in the Carrington courtyard, replacing the dull expanse of the courtyard. It would be turning it into a joyful, bright, exciting area for kids to learn, play, love and eat!
This Pannocchia Pizza oven would be sustainable because we will use all sustainable produce to make it. Additionally, the entire structure would be made from clay, mud, straw, sand and water.
The Cob pizza oven will have four of Hundertwasser’s beliefs such as; spontaneous vegetation, window rights, uneven floors and no straight lines. This ensures it is not only practical, but an art installation for all to enjoy.
Adding even more elements of community, the cob style pizza oven is able to be built and contributed to by all Middle School students.
When students cook together and eat as a community, it builds new friendships and community.
