When you review the term, we realise how quickly time passes. When you think we are now in August, it seems like yesterday we had our first day of 2024. When I realise we are nearing the end of our fifth year, I realise how much we have achieved – and how much more there is yet to come.
And we mature in our outlook – maturity is ageing. At five years old, we now have a clarity as to who we are and what we can offer. I am confident in our school’s offering – and grateful for the support of our teachers, our staff and our diverse community to realise and shape this massive vision.
I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve shared – one marked by growth, exploration, and the deepening of relationships that are the cornerstone of our educational philosophy. At Living School, our quest is more than academic success; it’s about cultivating a learning environment where relationships, trust, and responsible action are at the heart of everything we do.
Understanding Accuracy and Precision:
Accuracy and precision are concepts often discussed in educational contexts, yet their significance reaches far beyond the classroom. In simple terms, accuracy refers to how closely a measurement or answer aligns with the true value, while precision relates to the consistency of repeated measurements or results. Think of accuracy as hitting the target, and precision as hitting the same spot repeatedly. These concepts are wonderfully explored in the TED-Ed lesson by Matt Anticole, which I highly recommend: What’s the difference between accuracy and precision?.
In our progressive education model, we emphasize the importance of both accuracy and precision in all aspects of learning and personal development. We encourage our students to set clear goals (accuracy) and to work consistently towards them (precision). However, we also teach that mistakes are an integral part of the learning process. Refining a personal approach over time is essential to mastering any skill. To have the good will to meet these challenges is ingrained in the personal values and attitudes or our VAST model; to accept the change is needed develops from trusting relationships, a willingness to hear, and the drive to act on professional advice.
The Essential Role of Relationships in Learning:
Living School’s approach to education is centred around our three Learning Neighbourhoods, each designed to foster a strong sense of community, mutual respect, and shared responsibility. These neighbourhoods are more than just physical spaces – they are environments where students are encouraged to connect deeply with their peers, teachers, and the broader world around them.
In each of our Learning Neighbourhoods, students are not just recipients of information; they are active participants in a collaborative learning process. This model ensures that every student feels valued, fostering the trust and relationships that are crucial for meaningful learning. It’s through these relationships that students learn to take responsibility for their actions, to act with respect towards others, and to build positive, productive relationships that will serve them well throughout their lives.
Navigating the Rise of AI in Education:
The educational landscape is shifting rapidly, with new technologies such as AI becoming increasingly integrated into classrooms around the world. Recently, we’ve seen the advent of AI-powered classrooms, where teachers are being replaced by machines that deliver content, track student progress, and provide feedback.
While this development is certainly innovative, it also raises important questions about the future of education. At Living School, we see the use of AI in classrooms not with fear, but with concern. Teaching is not merely the transmission of knowledge or the correction of errors; it is an art that involves encouragement, care, and the nurturing of human potential. The essence of teaching lies in the relationships teachers build with their students – in the way they inspire curiosity, foster resilience, and guide students to see the world with open minds and compassionate hearts.
Why Relationships Matter More Than Ever:
As we navigate this era of technological advancement, it’s essential to remember that education is fundamentally a human endeavour. AI can offer personalized learning experiences, but it cannot replace the empathy, intuition, and encouragement that a teacher brings to the classroom. It is these qualities that make learning a truly transformative experience.
At Living School, we believe that the greatest need in education is for students to engage deeply with their learning – not just as consumers of content, but as individuals who connect with others, reflect on differences, and act with respect and responsibility. This is why we emphasize the importance of relationships in our learning model, and why we are committed to ensuring that our students develop the social and emotional skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Our Unique Learning Model:
Living School’s three Learning Neighbourhoods, combined with our six-week term structure based on KeyStone themes, offer a unique and progressive approach to education. These themes are designed to inspire inquiry, ignite curiosity, and connect students with real-world issues in meaningful ways. Our focus on inquiry and engagement ensures that students are not just learning content, but are developing the skills to think critically, communicate effectively, and act as responsible global citizens.
This holistic approach is further enriched by our commitment to implementing the globally renowned International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. The IB’s emphasis on inquiry, international-mindedness, and the development of the whole person aligns perfectly with our vision for education at Living School. Through the IB, we are preparing our students to navigate the complexities of the world with confidence, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility.
Looking Ahead:
As we look forward to the next term – Phenomena, I encourage our entire Living School community – students, parents, and staff – to continue nurturing the relationships that make our school so special. In a world where AI may change how content is delivered, let us not forget the irreplaceable value of human connection in education. Teaching is, at its core, an art of encouragement and care, and it is through this art that we guide our students to become not just learners, but thoughtful, empathetic, and globally-minded citizens.
Thank you for being part of this journey and for your unwavering support of our vision for progressive education.
