AM I ABLE TO TEACH IN AUSTRALIA?

Australia has migration requirements for anyone looking to enter the country beyond a holiday and/or short term stay.

Unfortunately, as a school, we are not able to secure visas for overseas workers.

This is something we will look to develop but the onus will be on the applicant.

Am I able to teach in Australia?

Thank you for your interest in a teaching role at Living School.

We celebrate our growth and international interest, as we develop into a world-leading educational offering.  In 2026, we are focused on delivering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program – the first school on the North Coast of NSW.

Australia has migration requirements for anyone looking to enter the country beyond a holiday and/or short term stay.

Unfortunately, as a school, we are not able to secure visas for overseas workers.  This is something we will look to develop but the onus will be on the applicant.

Below are the six steps needed for any applicants to follow.  If you have any queries, please reach out to our HR team.

STEP ONE
Teaching in Australia - checklist from AITSL

Here are the steps for researching how to migrate to Australia as a teacher as taken from the AITSL website.

  1. TEACHING IN AUSTRALIA
  2. BEFORE APPLYING
  3. FEES
  4. AGENT INFORMATION
  5. APPLICANT PORTAL
  6. BECOME A REGISTERED TEACHER

STEP TWO
Checklist of the approved teaching areas

There is a checklist for each of the teaching areas presented on the AITSL website (all are .pdf files)

* There is an option for a foreign Language teacher visa. You can find details on the Home Affairs website – HERE

STEP THREE
What are the visa requirements?

These are the list of visas that Pax Migration have advised are options for Secondary School Teachers (with a comparison to the visas on the Australian Home Affairs Skilled Occupation List and Pax Migration has the updated list of visas currently open):

STEP FOUR
Teaching in NSW - a state in Australia

Each state in Australia has authorisation over the teaching and schooling registration and accreditation requirements.  NSW Education Standards Authority manages all of NSW requirements with regard to teacher accreditation for Internationally Trained Teachers.

Find out more about accreditation and registration for internationally trained teachers applying to teach in NSW is via this NESA link

STEP FIVE
Child Safety - getting a Working With Children Check

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC)

The NSW (New South Wales) Working With Children Check application process needs to be completed while in NSW, because you will need to attend a Service NSW Centre to have your identification verified. This tends to be a quick process with the right identification, once you are in the country.

Please note that each Australian state has a different version of the Working With Children Check.

STEP SIX
Accommodation Challenges - finding a place to stay

The final and difficult step is finding good accommodation in this area.  If you are considering living near the coast – especially near Byron Bay or Suffolk Park – you will find rentals expensive and difficult to find.  Further inland prices are less expensive – but you will need to do your research.  LOTS of people want to live in this beautiful regional area.
