REIMAGINING EDUCATION
The Living School Difference
By John Stewart, Conductor of Living School
At Living School, we don’t just teach—we transform. Our approach is built on the foundations of progressive education, where every student is seen, heard, and empowered to explore their full potential. We believe in an education that goes beyond textbooks, fostering creativity, resilience, and a deep sense of connection to community and the world.
If you’re a parent looking for a school that nurtures whole-child development or a passionate educator seeking to work in a truly student-centred environment, read on. This is how Living School is reimagining education.
What is "Progressive Schooling"?
Progressive schooling is learning for life – not just for tests. It’s an approach that places the student at the centre, shifting away from rigid, traditional models and embracing real-world learning, critical thinking, and personal growth.
At Living School, we embody this by ensuring:
- Student-Centred Learning: Students are encouraged and supported to take an active role in their education, shaping their learning journey through inquiry, collaboration and exploration.
- Conceptual Mastery – we look at the theories needed to embrace our mathematical, literate and scientific domains. It is by teaching these ‘concepts’ we can trestle new knowledge by ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’.
- Experiential Education – Learning is hands-on, meaningful, and connected to real-world challenges. Whereas many are returning to a ‘knowledge-based’ curriculum, Living School believes in the development of teaching questioning and exploration via Inquiry Based Learning, supporting with scaffolding Problem Based Learning, and moving developmentally into Project Based Learning – where the scaffold is removed and the student’s interests guide their learning journey.
- Interdisciplinary Approach – Subjects are integrated via our Connections focus, allowing students to see how knowledge connects across different fields – not as knowledge silos.
- Equity and Inclusion – Every student is valued, and diversity is celebrated as a strength. Building in the process our respect for difference and our ownership of our commitment to social negotiation and a cultural moral development.
Our goal is to cultivate lifelong learners who think critically, collaborate effectively, and step confidently into the world as change-makers.
The Living School Approach: A New Model of Education.
Living School is built on progressive pedagogy, enriched with experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and courage. Every stage of a student’s journey is carefully designed to nurture growth, engagement, and success.
Living School’s Unique K-4: A Campus for Little Minds
At Living School, our Kindergarten to Year 4 program is designed to ignite curiosity, build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, and nurture creativity in a warm, engaging, and nature-connected environment.
A Love of Learning: Literacy, Numeracy & Curiosity
We prioritise strong literacy and numeracy skills, ensuring our youngest learners develop the confidence and ability to express themselves, think critically, and explore new ideas. Learning is hands-on, immersive, and joyful, with a focus on inquiry-based exploration that encourages curiosity, wonder, and a lifelong love of learning.
Creativity at the Heart: The MAD Program
Our Music, Art, and Drama (MAD) program fosters self-expression, confidence, and imagination. Through specialist-led music sessions, visual arts projects, and drama performances, students experiment, collaborate, and develop their creative voices in a way that is playful, engaging, and deeply enriching.
Onland Learning: Connecting to Nature Every Friday
Fridays are a highlight at Living School’s K-4 campus, as students step beyond the classroom for Onland Learning—our outdoor, nature-based program. In the natural environment, children explore, play, problem-solve, and discover the world around them, building resilience, confidence, and a deep respect for nature.
Living School’s K-4 campus is more than a place of learning – it’s a thriving space for exploration, creativity, and foundational growth. Here, little minds dream big, discover new passions, and develop the skills they need to flourish.
Middle School Years 5-8: Learning Through Projects
In Middle School, we embrace Project-Based Learning (PBL)—a model where students tackle real-world problems in collaborative, research-driven projects. Imagine students designing sustainable cities, exploring human rights through storytelling, or conducting environmental research on the impact of climate change.
Stage 5: Expeditions & Experiential Learning
By Stage 5, students embark on expeditions, taking their learning into nature and the broader community. Whether it’s wilderness adventures, cultural immersion programs, or service-based learning, these experiences foster resilience, leadership, and a deep connection to the world.
The IB Diploma Programme: A Global Pathway
For students seeking academic rigour with a global perspective, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is the perfect fit. Recognised by universities worldwide, the IB challenges students to think critically, act ethically, and engage deeply with their studies—skills that will serve them for life.
Small Group Learning & Individual Attention
We prioritise small classes and personalised learning, ensuring that every student receives the guidance, support, and encouragement they need to thrive. No one is left behind—every student is seen, valued, and nurtured.
Three-Campus Model & Rites of Passage
Living School is more than a school—it’s a journey. Our three-campus model ensures that students transition seamlessly through different stages of growth, each marked by rites of passage designed to celebrate their development and milestones.
A Curriculum Built for the Future
Our curriculum is unique—structured yet flexible, designed to engage, challenge, and inspire.
Six-Week Term Times & Learning Blocks – Short, focused terms allow for deeper learning and avoid burnout.
Keystone Themes – Every year, students revisit six foundational themes that grow in complexity:
- Identity – Who am I? How do I relate to the world?
- Nature – Understanding ecosystems, sustainability, and our place in the environment.
- Life & Living – The science, ethics, and philosophy of existence.
- Civilisation – History, culture, and the evolution of human societies.
- Phenomena – The mysteries of science, mathematics, and the universe.
- Service – How can we contribute and make a difference?
This spiral curriculum ensures that students build upon previous knowledge, reinforcing learning while exploring new perspectives.
The Heart of Living School: Care & Kindness
Above all, Living School is a place of trust, compassion, and connection. We embrace the VAST model: Values, Attitudes, Skills, and Trust – to create a culture where students feel safe, respected, and empowered.
Values-Based Learning – Ethics, empathy, and a commitment to doing good in the world.
Authentic Relationships – Strong connections between teachers, students, and families – that are positive productive.
Supportive Environment – whole-being and inclusivity are prioritised at every level.
Transformative Experiences – Students graduate with purpose, resilience, and confidence in their future.
This isn’t just education—it’s preparation for life.

Progressive compared to Alternative Schooling
- Alternative schools often prioritise non-traditional structures, such as mixed-age learning, student-led inquiry, and experiential education, sometimes incorporating spiritual or holistic elements.
- Progressive schools are rooted in the educational philosophies of thinkers, emphasising critical pedagogy, real-world application of knowledge, and student agency within a structured yet flexible curriculum. Living School exemplifies this progressive ethos by integrating evidence-based, student-centred learning with a strong focus on interdisciplinary connections, authentic assessment, and community engagement.
- Unlike some alternative models that may resist formal assessment frameworks, Living School balances innovation with accountability, ensuring that students develop the skills and competencies necessary for success in further education and beyond.
- Progressive schools maintain a deliberate alignment with contemporary educational research, fostering a dynamic, future-focused learning environment.
“A transformed school will not look like that brick building set apart from the society it is intended to serve. A transformed school will be an integrated part of the community and its students will be active participants and contributors to the community. In short, a transformed school will look more like life.”
