All staff are required to actively supervise. Active Supervision applies to ALL non-classroom areas where students are present during a school day and not under an individual teacher’s direction, for example:

• playground
• classrooms
• eating areas
• toilets
• walkways
• stairs
• gardens (and out of bound areas)

There are two key parts to active supervision:

1. pre reminder of expected behaviours by all staff at all times.
2. Active Supervision of non classroom areas involves Move – Scan – Act.

Staff are provided with high visibility vests so they can be easily located by staff and students. Vest should be worn on the playground at duty times and off site.

• MOVE – Constant, planned and purposeful BUT unpredictable to the students, targeted and designed to increase contact opportunities. 
• SCAN – Keep your head up and look purposeful so students will notice you
  • Target both appropriate and inappropriate behaviours
  • Constantly shift your visual & auditory attention to cover all areas under supervision
  • Listen for appropriate and inappropriate words or sounds
  • Know the ‘Targets’: problem areas, activities, groups, individuals
  • Increase opportunities for positive contact. (5:1)
• ACT – Demonstrate positive contact that is:
  • Friendly, helpful and open in appearance
  • Proactive and not subject to chance (not getting involved in lengthy conversations or games)
  • High in the delivery of positives
  • Short – 5 to 10 seconds in duration

·  Inclusive of groups rather than individuals, so that more students are affected.

A teacher retains a duty of care above and beyond a scheduled supervision duty.

If you are witness to a supervision need, you are professionally required to intervene to ensure the situation is resolved, e.g. if you notice there is a supervision duty unattended, you are required to take on the responsibility of supervising and sending a student to the office to address.  If you are in a building and notice students in an area that is designated Out of Bounds, you must act to address and resolve the situation in line with Living School’s protocols.
